Monuments and Memorials: Proposals, Pitches, Visits and Models

The stories sites tell are universal. The dangers they face are immense. The cultural treasures that have been entrusted to us are under constant attack by time, neglect, natural forces, and human actions. Preserving this heritage has—from the beginning—been the overriding mission of World Monuments Fund, as we work with local partners around the globe to provide financial and technical support for preservation, restoration, and long-term stewardship.

This digital memorial raises questions about the largest slave trades in history and offers access to the documentation available to answer them.

The Irish Memorial is about the dedication to the memory of more than one million innocent men, women and children who perished during the years 1845 to 1850 and to the millions of Irish immigrants who found here in the United States of America the freedom, liberty and prosperity denied to their ancestors in Ireland.

The California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) administers federally and state mandated historic preservation programs to further the identification, evaluation, registration, and protection of California's irreplaceable resources.

The mission of Remember Them is to inspire the public to deepen their personal commitment to humanitarian values and actions in their own lives and communities.

From the artists' website: We invite the citizens of Harburg, and visitors to the town, to add their names here to ours. In doing so we commit ourselves to remain vigilant. As more and more names cover this 12 metre-high lead column, it will gradually be lowered into the ground. One day it will have disappeared completely and the site of the Harburg monument against fascism will be empty. In the long run, it is only we ourselves who can stand up against injustice. »

By engraving, gouging and hammering signed messages, opinions and commentaries, members of the public engaged with the dynamic of the project. When one accessible part was covered with inscriptions, it was immediately sunk into the ground. After seven years of progressive descents, all that remains visible are the top of the monument now level with the ground and the text panel.

Criteria for proposed new monuments on city property that are privately funded

A free public exhibition showcasing the winner and finalists' design concepts was held from September 8 through October 20, 2016 in the Hall of Nations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Prepared by NCPC and its partners, the plan identifies 100 potential locations for memorials and museums and provides general guidelines for their development. The plan is an important tool in guiding site selection for new commemorative works and museums.
