Project Overview

Politics of Contemporary Middle East                                                                      Country Profile Project - January 2018

Research:

Students will have three class periods to obtain information.  A resource guide with websites and databases which should be useful in this process is on Schoology..  The information about each nation should include:

  • History of the nation [only briefly deal with pre-WWI; focus primarily on the nation in the 20th century to the present]
    • Especially the most important events [whether historical, political, social, environmental, etc.] impacting the nation during the last 50 years – post 1970
  • Geography, Population, Flag, Anthem, etc.
  • Government [structure, leaders, elections, citizen participation]
  • Religion
  • Ethnic Groups
  • Culture
  • Social Divisions/Conflicts [if any] / Role of women /
  • Participation in Arab organizations as well as other international organizations
  • Economy [major resources, trade with Arab nations and world, GDP, HDI]
  • Relations with other nations in Middle East
  • Relations with the United States
  • Current issues of concern to the nation
  • Any other information deemed significant or interesting [Sports/Olympics;  Special attractions; unusual facts…….]

Power point Presentation:  [50 points = Homework category [slide show] AND 25 points = Class work category [oral presentation

 Guidelines: 

  1.  20-25 slides approximately
  2. A works cited slide.
  3. Don’t put too much writing; key words, phrases, etc. not paragraphs of complete info; not ‘text heavy’
  4. All members of the group must participate in the oral presentation.  Students may receive different scores for the oral part of the presentation.  Each student will receive the same score for the slide project itself.

Study Guide/Visual Organizer:  [25 points / Homework category]

Guidelines:

  1. This can be in the form of an outline; fill-in-the blanks [in conjunction with the order of the slide show]; questions with blank spaces, etc. 
  2. Each study guide should include a glossary of terms, names important to recognize in a study of this nation.  The study guide must follow the order of the slide presentation so that students can easily record the necessary information.
  3. Each student will receive the same score for the Study Guide.
  4. An Answer Key must be provided with each Study Guide.

Submission Deadline and Format:

  1.  All Study Guides as well as the Power Point Presentations must be submitted to me via email.
