Semester One: Essential Questions

(Geography) How have geographic features influenced the political, economic, social, and historical development of countries and regions?

(Political Systems + Government) What is power? How is power gained, used and justified? How have governments sought to achieve economic, political or social goals for their societies?  How are governments created, structured, maintained and changed?

(Religion/Philosophy) How has the diffusion of religious/philosophical belief systems affected societies both internally and externally?

(Innovation/Achievements) Evaluate the effectiveness of new technological innovations and their various effects on societies and the world.

(Challenging Authority)  How have efforts by individuals challenged traditions and influenced change in  societies?

(Cultural Diffusion/Economics) Throughout history people, goods and ideas have spread across societies, making the world more interconnected in a variety of ways.  How have the changes that resulted from these movements significantly influenced groups of people, societies, and regions?

(Social Structure) How is power distributed among groups within societies? How has the role of women varied across societies? How have pluralism and toleration been evidenced in various societies? How have the experiences of groups at the “bottom” and “top” of the social order been similar or differed?
